Night Sky Photography & Astrophotography
By John Berry
Is the subject of this month’s Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) meeting. EVAS, in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory, is offering a free public open house and lecture on Saturday, April 25th at 7:00 pm. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes Valley.
Our speaker is John Berry, a full-time photographer/Videographer. Most recently, John has been working as a Production Manager for the Rocky Mountain Channel, which is based in Estes Park. In his role there, John produces outdoor adventure-style videos and assists in managing the workflow that the channel receives.
John will share how his passion for storytelling evolved into night sky photography and astrophotography, including behind‑the‑scenes looks at his Milky Way timelapses, alpine long‑exposures, and the unforgettable experiences that come with shooting in the Rockies after dark. From getting lost in a snowstorm while dressed as an astronaut to capturing ice climbers and moonlit landscapes, his stories highlight both the beauty and the challenges of photographing the night sky. Join us for an inspiring evening that blends creativity, adventure, and practical insight into capturing the cosmos.
The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. Park in the teacher’s parking lot between the high school and the observatory. The doors will open at 7:00 pm, and the meeting will start at 7:30 pm. The presentation, including a question-and-answer period, lasts about an hour. After the presentation, weather permitting, we will look through our 16-inch dome telescope at various celestial objects.
